Gibson School demonstration is held.
September 4, 1968
Parents occupy the building to protest that it has not been sufficiently repaired from a fire that damaged it the previous spring. They also demand appointment of their own “community principal.” The next day, the parents, after being locked out of the building and accompanied by five teachers, lead children to the nearby Robert Gould Shaw House, where they establish a “liberation school.” Parents return their children Gibson on November 6, 1968, but the teachers who joined the walkout are subsequently fired. Their dismissal is upheld by the Supreme Judicial Court on July 3, 1970.
